Broccoli, Apples, and Tomatoes - Do your kids know what they are?
Have you been watching Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution? If you haven’t, you should! I suppose growing up in a household that valued eating home cooked food and playing sports makes me one of the lucky ones. It’s scary to see how many children out there have parents who let (and even encourage) them to make choices that will kill them!
If you haven’t been watching, the most appalling episode was the first. (If you haven’t seen it, you must watch it.)
First, Jamie dumps all the food from a local family’s fridge and pantry on the table to show them how disgusting it is, then he asks an entire first grade class to name a bunch of fresh vegetables. And guess what - they don’t get a single one right. Yes, 25 kids guessing 1 vegetable at a time and nada!
To put this in perspective - I was unpacking groceries and did the same thing with a friend’s 2-year-old that weekend. She got everything right! Broccoli, tomatoes, grapes, lettuce, bananas and cucumbers. She’s TWO and aced the test an entire class of 6-yr-olds couldn’t pass.
So parents, I beg you - please watch this show. Please educate your children. And please make being healthy something that’s important to both you and your children!
